World Championships 2009: Bronze for David

At the men’s morning competition, David Lama qualified for the final round with a place 7. A stubborn flu caused some days of suffering for the all-round talent: “The last few days really sucked the power out of me,” David complained before the start. But as the pro he is, Lama managed to harness his last reserves and raised the bar for his competitors. Six of the other nine finalist could not best Lama’s results, and with a sudden turn of events, the weakened Tyrolean was able to win his first World Championship medal.

David Lama: “Naturally, the last few days of illness made me physically weaker, but I was so disappointed with my performance during the qualifications and that I just barely made it into the final round with a 7th place. During the final I gave everything I had and all the training paid off. Of course I went to China with the goal to win gold, but after this whole ordeal I am very satisfied with my performance and my bronze medal!”

ÖWK Team Coach Heiko Wilhelm: “It was a very close competition, but David kept his nerves under control and has thereby shown what’s possible for the coming Lead World Cup season.”
